Equipment notes

The Archivist’s kit

The equipment our articles keep coming back to, gathered in one place: what to scan with, what to store in, how to measure a room and how to protect the papers that cannot be replaced. Each group opens with the rule of thumb that matters more than the brand.

Scanners for prints, papers and bound volumes

Match the scanner to the material. Loose prints go fastest through a photo feeder, letters and forms through a duplex document scanner, and anything bound or brittle belongs face up under an overhead camera, never pressed flat on glass.
